The Solukhumbu Women’s Hostel project is officially underway! All ten volunteers have arrived into Kathmandu and we have spent the last 24 hours sightseeing and orienting everyone for life at the project site. We have quite a diverse volunteer group from different countries and ranging in age from 20s to 60s. We have 5 volunteers from the U.S., 3 from New Zealand, 1 from Australia, and 1 from Canada.
Tomorrow, we will fly into Salleri and hike 1 hour into the Everest region to move in with our host families. We will begin working with the locals, who have been busy at work for weeks, to build the foundation for the hostel. The hostel will house approximately 40 girls from rural areas where higher education is not accessible. This project will last approximately six months and run until July 1st 2011. We are actively recruiting volunteers for our January 24th start date so please email firstname.lastname@example.org if you are interested!
I’ll be offline for the next week but as soon as I return on the 17th, I will blog and post photos of our progress. If you are friends or family of the volunteers, please know that everyone is in great spirits and looking forward to rolling up our sleeves and getting dirty!
