We at Edge of Seven, along with all of our colleagues and supporters working to empower girls and women across the globe, are celebrating International Day of the Girl today, and we hope you are, too!
Today marks the first annual celebration of International Day of the Girl, a United Nations-sponsored movement to speak out against gender bias and advocate for girls’ rights everywhere. For those of you who tuned in to last week’s PBS premiere of the incredibly powerful film “Half the Sky”, you may be coming to realize that the issues related to women’s empowerment in the developing world are some of the most important social issues of our time. By educating women and girls and eliminating bias, abuse, and oppression from their lives, we have the power to end poverty and truly change the course of our world.
We’re also excited to join our good friends over at the 10×10 Project today in their “Basic Math” campaign. Check out the photos below of some lovely attendees from our annual fundraising event last week who took the time to answer, in their own words, the question, “Girls + Education = ???”
We’d love to hear from you today in the comments section below! Are you celebrating International Day of the Girl? How?
Looking for ways to make a direct impact on the life of a girl in the developing world? Consider making a donation to Edge of Seven or getting involved with our International Volunteer Program. We have several exciting projects on the horizon for 2013 in Nepal and Tanzania!
