This month, we’re excited to announce that ground has broken on the Solukhumbu Girls’ University Hostel that we are supporting in Salleri, Nepal! This six-room, earthbag building will host 20 girls who are pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in its inaugural year, and it will be built adjacent to the existing dormitory we completed with our local partners in 2011, which hosts 40 girls pursuing a higher secondary educations in grades 11 and 12.
In most villages in the Solukhumbu District, students aren’t able to access school after grade 10. With higher secondary schools located only in the district capital of Salleri and the village of Basa, providing gender-appropriate, safe housing for girls is crucial to increase their chances of accessing higher education.
We look forward to bringing you more news as the building progresses, and send a big thank you to our local partners, volunteers, and everyone who has supported this initiative!
